Replicon Inc.

2006 Winner: Outstanding Commercial Achievement in Alberta Science and Technology (Sales less than 25 million)

A Calgary company is finding international success with its web-based software solutions that are helping businesses improve their performance. Replicon Inc. offers a variety of products for project-focused organizations, from a program that can analyze workforce productivity to a tool that can schedule projects and track employee time off. Business is booming and in response to increased demand the company opened new offices this year in Austin, Texas and Bangalore, India.

Replicon Inc. was founded in 1996 by Raj Narayanaswamy and Lakshmi Raj, a dedicated husband and wife team who have established the company as a leading vendor in productivity software development. They now have more than 4,200 customers which include Procter and Gamble, Petro-Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, Intel and Motorola.

Time and expense management solutions are at the core of Replicon’s business. Web TimeSheet, its flagship application launched in 1998, provides organizations with quantitative, real-time analysis of workforce productivity and helps define meaningful productivity goals for employees, all directly tied to bottom-line revenues.

Web TimeSheet’s success led to the launch of Web Resource. This is a high-level resource and project scheduling tool. This product was followed by Web TimeOff that replaces the traditional paper-based methodologies of tracking time off with automated communication via the web.

In a marketplace that demands quick response time and new methodologies, Replicon invests a large portion of its earnings into product research and development. About 20 per cent of expenses are also research related.

Replicon is now a leading company in this province and in Canada, and has grown from 40 to 120 employees. This year, Replicon was recognized by Alberta Venture as one of Alberta’s fastest growing companies, was selected as a finalist for Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and was also named one of Canada’s top exporters by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
