Initiative: ELITE Program for Black Youth

The Experiential Learning in Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship (ELITE) Program for Black Youth provides experiential learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) for Black youth aged 15-22. Along with paid work-integrated internship experiences, interns participate in entrepreneurship training and wellness coaching. The program endeavours to help Black youth develop marketable technical skills, transition into post-secondary studies and build a professional network.

Dr. André McDonald is currently the Director of the ELITE Program, Associate Vice President (Strategic Research Initiatives and Performance), and a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta. His current research involves the development of multi-functional coatings that provide wear and erosion resistance, heating, and structural health monitoring to a variety of structures. Dr. McDonald has trained nearly 100 students, fellows, and research associates in the areas of thermal spraying and heat transfer and has received multiple awards including the Mentorship Award from the Faculty of Engineering (University of Alberta), and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta’s Early Accomplishment Award.
